Korean Startup doubleO Brings Chip-Off SSD Forensics to CES 2027
CELLTRACE recovers data from physically damaged drives and logs the process for court
BUSAN, South Korea — A drive that no longer powers on is not necessarily empty: the data can still sit on its NAND chips even after the controller that addressed them has failed. As physical damage takes drives offline and courtroom evidence standards tighten, Busan-based startup doubleO will bring its answer — CELLTRACE, an AI-driven chip-off SSD forensic recovery suite — to the CES 2027 Innovation Awards.
How It Works
CELLTRACE removes the NAND chips from a damaged drive and reads the data directly off the silicon, bypassing the failed controller. Its EXTRACTOR module reads four NAND channels in parallel, which doubleO says is roughly four times faster than single-channel, hardware-based rivals. For chips too degraded to read reliably, the CLONER module performs what the company calls a first-of-its-kind cell-level cloning, reproducing a damaged die onto a healthy chip so examiners can retry a read without touching the original evidence; the clone is checked against an industry-standard PC-3000 Portable Pro.
doubleO says the method is covered by its patent portfolio, which includes both granted and pending patents. doubleO holds eight registered patents and fifteen registered software copyrights as of 2025, with four applications pending at the USPTO.
Built for the Courtroom
To keep results admissible, CELLTRACE write-blocks seized media and logs every operation as a timestamped, hash-chained entry. The company also plans an on-device, small-language-model assistant, Forensic Copilot, that will take plain-language instructions, operate the equipment and draft case notes for an examiner's approval, within the same write-blocking boundary. Commercial release is planned for early 2027.
"Evidence that cannot be read is evidence that does not exist," said doubleO CEO Myoung Hwan Joung. "What matters is not only that the data comes back, but that how it came back can be shown in court."
doubleO entered the CES Innovation Awards for the first time in 2026, and returns for CES 2027 in the Busan Metropolitan City Joint Pavilion.
